Captains of Entropy recently spoke with us about their new single, ‘Infection‘.
What inspired ‘Infection’?
I’m a collector of records as well as a DJ, and one of the genres I’m a huge fan of is West African high life and funk. The music oozes groove and playfulness and is a percussive mosaic of different little parts. You can certainly hear some of that in “Infection” as it was created to make one dance and wiggle. The rhythm does all the weight on this one. The keys give color, texture and melody. But the key is the GROOVE. – Mike
Did the song turn out the way you expected?
I think we used the studio well on this one to take it to a more fleshed-out place than we originally intended. Bill guided us into the right direction by encouraging more orchestration and “build” in the C section and I think that really helped propel it further out of a simple dance tune into something more narrative. – Mike
How was making this song different from your usual process?
It was quite different as it is one of the only songs we’ve ever recorded to a click track. The order of operations was therefore slightly different, and so our approach to this song became a little more deliberate and less just see what happens. – Mike
How did you build the track together?
Like most everything we do it was born from us jamming on something Mikey had written years ago. Once I found the drum groove, I knew it would work, and we fine-tuned the arrangement during the recording process. – Jason
What do you enjoy most about being in the band?
Where do I begin? Honestly, just the whole “being in the band” thing is pretty enjoyable in and of itself. Before hooking up with these guys, I hadn’t been actively involved with making music for quite a while. When we first got together to jam, I had no idea it would lead to all this. Captains of Entropy is a very special project; we get to set our own rules and our own agenda, we get to express ourselves freely and openly, we get to see what happens when we let the music guide us, we get to play together! So yeah, I think “being in the band” is what I enjoy most about being in the band. – Reilly
What was the most fun part of making the video?
The whole shoot was really quick and lighthearted. We didn’t have any complicated setups or anything. My favorite part was probably throwing goldfish at each other. That was fun. – Jason
Why did you want to work with Matthew Mourgides again?
Matthew is more than a collaborator; he’s a dear old friend, and he’s part of the family. I’ve actually known Matthew for longer than I’ve known either Mike or Jason. He’s also one of the wildest and most creative people I’ve ever met, which is why we tapped him and his team to do our first video (The Flea). That project turned into more of a short film set to music; it was so beautiful, and so absurd, and so incredibly fun to make. When we needed more live action visuals for the new material, we really didn’t have to think too hard about it; Matthew was the obvious choice. – Reilly
How important is having fun when you make music?
As far as I’m concerned, it is the #1 most important thing of all. If we’re not having fun, then what the hell are we doing it for? Of course there are some parts about making music that are more fun than others. It can be tedious, laborious, even stressful at times, but that’s just part of the creative process. Fortunately for us, we only answer to ourselves and to each other. No one is telling us what kind of music to make, who to make it for, where to make it, or when it needs to be finished. As long as the three of us can agree on something, it’s on the table. That kind of creative freedom is rare, and it makes the entire endeavor seem like a big adventure; an open-ended exploration that we can take in whatever direction we want. What could be more fun than that?! – Reilly
What can fans expect from Captain of Entropy next?
We have a lot of new sounds and excitingly absurd visuals releasing over the next year that we are really looking forward to sharing – Jason
