Greg Hoy returns with another instant classic in his new single, ‘Yay For Effort’.
A singer songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, recording engineer, and record label owner (phew!) Greg Hoy channels the most memorable music of the late 70s and 80s, and says, “I’m also something of a marketing guru, as well as a jingle and sound composer and producer, “people engineer” in the tech world, and an art director. But when you boil it all down, I’m really just a guy in a band.”
If you say so Greg! We’d argue otherwise.
Greg Hoy has worked with the likes of Glenn Branca, J. Robbins, Steve Albini, and Ice-T, among many others, and his songs have been featured on such tv shows as ‘One Tree Hill’, and MTV’s ‘Made’. Additionally, he’s performed live at Noise Pop, SXSW, CMJ, and on the main stage at Latitude Festival in the UK.
Latest single, ‘Yay For Effort’, sees Greg Hoy channel Elvis Costello, as well as giving him an opportunity to show off his singing and instrumentals chops. While the track is crisp and clean and a very pleasing song to listen to, there’s nonetheless a hard edge to it all, with lyrics such as,
“Hope is just another word / regardless of what you heard”
‘Yay For Effort’, from Hoy’s new remix EP, ‘Extra Effort’, his new remix EP, which was produced by the legendary J Robbins, comes with a music video that is a suitable pairing for the retro-feel song.
With a VHS-glitch effect, the clip evokes a post-Covid landscape, where everyone just wants to have fun, despite the feeling of impending doom and gloom around them. Mock Cyrillic letters share the lyrics at the bottom of the screen, while Hoy plays guitar, drums, and keys, all while dressed in a hazmat suit and gas mask, looking every bit like he’s stepped out of a video by Devo, or The Talking Heads. While all this is going on, a fuzzy backdrop, like an old-CRT tv screen that’s on the blink, plays post-apocalyptic scenes.
‘Yay For Effort’ is out now and can be streamed and downloaded on Spotify, Apple Music, and Bandcamp. You can find out more about Greg Hoy and his music online on his official website, Instagram, and Twitter.
