Bruce Lii – ‘Outta Town’

If you’ve ever been to Las Vegas you’ll instantly recognise what town Bruce Lii is visiting when he’s getting ‘Outta Town’ in his new single of the same name. But when you’re from everywhere, like Bruce is – how do you really get outta town?

Okay so, Bruce Lii was raised in Pittsburgh, but he’s a man of the world. Sure, his rap, with its witty, lyrics-intensive style, is of the variety for which his hometown is famous, but his sound is from everywhere, he’s picked up influences from all over the US, courtesy of his non-music life, which sees him shipping cargo long-haul across the country.

Bruce Lii is a student of the rap game; he’s steeped in the history of hip-hop, and aligned with the masters of the form. His latest single, ‘Outta Town’, sounds contemporary, but at its very heart it’s a muscular old-school jam, characterised by clever turns of phrase. He’s not afraid to give credit where it’s due either, and in the track he drops both overt and implicit references to P. Diddy, Big Pun, Notorious B.I.G., and other legends into the lyrics.

The music video sees director Jordan Beckham filming the rapper and his girl under the lights of the Las Vegas Strip, where he’s right at home. In one sequence, Beckham takes us to the casino floor, where we see Bruce Lii shaking the dice at a craps table. Does he throw a seven? Is there any other possibility?
