‘Lone Wolf Party’, from Sputnik The Band, feels like a re-discovery of an angsty 90s indie-rock number, and yet it still holds its own in this current era of late-stage capitalism.
Comprising the airy-voiced Genie Morrow, and mega-talented multi-instrumentalist, Nigel Rawles, Sputnik The Band has been drifting like satellites through the music scenes of New York and New Jersey, the pair collaborating as far back as 2002. With their debut release, ‘Meet Sputnik’, they introduced themselves with an eclectic mix that explored lo-fi, garage, rock, and pop, all bubbling over with their distinct personalities. Now, following several ambitious projects, hundreds of shows, and numerous fateful encounters, they continue to keep creating, while their enthusiasm shines through.
Sputnik The Band’s new album, ‘Global Positioning System’, released on the 5th of June, is a reflection of their more than two decades of innovation, creativity, and curiosity, and brings together lifelong friends and new collaborators in the studio. The result pushed Sputnik’s sound even further out into the galaxy, and even beyond the cosmos that we know.
Their latest single, ‘Lone Wolf Party’, sees the duo joined by recording artist Kendall Jane Meade, and together the band rumbles along, with pounding bass, sparkling synths, and somewhat eerie howls at the moon, all while offering listeners the comforting reminder that we’re not alone in the way we feel, and that life is meant to be shared.
With the music video for ‘Lone Wolf Party’, we’re transported back in time, where a retro, glitchy wonderland seems suspended out of time. Morrow is at the bus stop, considering her life, while she’s joined by Rawles, brimming with energy, and Meade, who’s somewhat distraught. Together the three set off on a late-night escapade through the city, checking out ramen shops in back alleys, nostalgic phone booths, and convenience stores lit with bright fluorescent lights. Things are not as they seem however, with the man lurking in the hazmat suit suggesting there’s something more to all this. But while this might be an apocalyptic nod to the end of the world, there’s still a ray of hope in that joy can be found in even the smallest things.
