Mýa And Too $hort Bring The Very Best Of Late 80s R&B With ‘Just A Little Bit’

Creative powerhouse Mýa follows up her single, ‘ASAP’ with a new Pop/R&B track, ‘Just A Little Bit’, which sees her collaborate with West Coast Rap pioneer, Too $hort.

A co-production between Mýa and Lamar “MyGuyMars” Edwards, ‘Just A Little Bit’ opens with crunchy synths that bring with them echoes of the heyday of hip hop. The listener is instantly transported back in time, Mýa’s vocals steamy and seductive, sounding like she’s having a conversation down a landline telephone. The exchange between her and Too $hort brings with it a familiarity; “I ain’t never too busy for you”, proclaims Too $hort, his words unshakably confident and erudite. Mýa on the other hand, while hinting that she’s open to what he’s proposing, has her own requirements, which she has no hesitation in outlining, because she knows her worth. “All I ask is you don’t go wastin’ my time” she asks: “Gotta put in that work”.

Overall the track is a gorgeous tribute to the lush and stylish voices of the women who dominated the R&B and pop scene of the late 80s – Whitney, Patti, Tina, Janet, Aretha, Diana – complete with pulsating beats, and sumptuous harmonies. When Too $hort enters, his bars perfectly flowing over the melody, his legendary status is assured, by way of his assertive delivery.

The music video harks back to the highlights of the 80s as well, reminiscent in parts of Michael Jackson’s clip for ‘Rock With You’, with its soft blues and greens. Mýa sets her boundaries, while at the same time challenging the object of her affection to come and get her – so long as he gives in to her demands. All she asks is that he puts in “Just A Little Bit” of effort, “A Little Bit” of reciprocation, and “A Little Bit” of love.
