We ‘Take A Shot’ With Bay Area Legend, D-Shot

From the Bay Area of California, Vallejo specifically, a musical movement was born, that reshaped West Coast hip-hop forever. The “first family of rap”, led by D-Shot, and his siblings E-40, B-Legit, and Suga-T, were known collectively The Click, and in the mid-1990s they carved out a gritty sound that funky, slang-heavy, and unapologetically real.

Beyond his role as a musical pioneer, D-Shot is known as the creator of one of hip-hop’s most recognisable hooks, the refrain on the West Coast classic, ‘Captain Save A Hoe’. The record remains a cultural touchstone, emblematic of the sharp wit, street wisdom, and quotable brilliance that defined an era. Now, after decades in the game, D-Shot continues to evolve, while remaining fully grounded. Tracks such as, ‘Take A Shot’, fully and authentically captures the raw essence of the Bay and surrounding area’s shifting sonic landscape, and allowing emerging voices to shine.

‘Take A Shot’ sees D-Shot embracing his wild side: enjoying life, and living fully in the moment, giving a night out an unmatchable soundtrack. An 808-heavy groove growls beneath neon lights, positioning D-Shot as the messenger bringing news of an epic adventure, where one round quickly becomes two, two becomes three, and so on. We are invited to come along for the ride, as every element of the track fully exemplifies why D-Shot’s presence is so commanding. He’s a mentor too – and isn’t afraid to share the stage with those who are up and coming after him. Bagbaby Milli takes D-Shot’s open verse and sets it on fire, his lines spat with full confidence, as if he was a seasoned veteran.

D-Shot, along with many other Bay Area musical heavyweights, fully trust videographer Jae Synth with their music videos, and for good reason. Synth has that innate ability to perfectly capture the exact energy that drives a song, and is gifted with the ability to transform an ordinary venue into the hoppingest party on Earth. D-Shot steps into the club, and immediately it’s clear that if there’s any party about to happen, it’s only on his say so. He’s got his entourage in tow, and shots of Bacardi, Henny, and Patrón flow freely. With Synth’s quick cuts and vibrant aesthetic, it’s evident that ‘Take A Shot’ is more than a command to have a drink, but rather, refers to doing that thing you’ve been meaning to.
