Honouring their Afro-Latino and Afro-Mexican heritage, Sen Dog (Cypress Hill) and Kemo The Blaxican (ex-Delinquent Habits) come together as Negros De La Raza, and their latest single, ‘Para Mi Gente’.
The project’s name, which translates into English as, “Blacks of the Race,” brings into every verse pride, resilience, and identity, and, as the duo explains, “It’s about owning who we are and sparking conversation around pride, unity, life, and strength”.
Of course, bi-lingual hip-hop isn’t new, but both Sen Dog and Kemo The Blaxican have played a part in defining it. Now, as Negros De La Raza, they’re not revisiting the past, but rather, they’re reclaiming that foundation, reinventing it. With a chemistry that’s been honed to perfection, there’s excitement in what they will bring with their upcoming debut album, ‘La Pura Neta (El Borracho y El Marijuano)’, set for release later this year, and debut single, ‘Para Mi Gente’, is a fantastic sign of what is to come.
Produced by Chazz (Fiyastarta) Padilla, ‘Para Mi Gente’ sees Negros De La Raza blend classic West Coast grit with cinematic Latin detail, resulting in an anthem that, as Kemo says, “This one’s for the people in the struggle. For everyone still standing tall.”
Directed by Jorge Newman, and executive produced by Mr Tiger, the music video for ‘Para Mi Gente’ unfolds like a love letter to Los Angeles, telling the story of its neighbourhoods, history, and endurance. Shot across the city, it serves as a celebration of Chicano & Latino identity, with clips of locals who bring their cultural richness to the community. The duo explain, “We wanted to honour where we come from while showing how our culture still stands strong. This isn’t nostalgia – it’s evolution”.
