Essentially Pop is pleased to premiere the new release from Kerry Kenny Band, ‘Pining Time (Remix)’. An upbeat retro-sounding song, it also features a fun video that sees her running through the streets of New York, every bit like a superhero.
With a rhythm that is reminiscent of Shocking Blue’s ‘Venus’, ‘Pining Time (Remix)’ brings to its sound a mix of rock, folk, punk, and Celtic vibes, the latter in the form of high-energy fiddle. It’s irresistibly catchy, with Kenny’s vocals soaring over the rock guitars, steady drums, and plinking piano.
While based in Pennsylvania, Kerry Kenny Band has toured internationally for years, which has had a strong influence on their sound, and giving their music a global perspective. Kerry herself has performed and taught across Europe and Asia, and sees ‘Pining Time (Remix)’ as a bridge to her international fans. With a worldwide release through Sony Orchard, the song marks a brand new and bold chapter for the band, and serves as an anthem for motion, endurance, and creative fearlessness.
‘Pining Time (Remix)’ is a re-imagining of the title track of their 2023 album, and has been given a sharper edge, and further urgency. The music video was conceived by Kerry Kenny, and co-directed by drummer Mark Grasso, and channels the chaos to be found in the cult classic, ‘Run Lola Run’, while ensuring it’s fully grounded in New York City, in instantly recognisable locations. As Kenny explains, “I wanted to show the city as I experienced it. Not the postcard version, but the rush of being alive inside it”.
The video, shot guerrilla-style at dawn, is spontaneous from the outset, with Kerry running through the real streets of New York, past taxis, bodegas, and intersections which would at any other time of day be filled with cars and pedestrians. She’s bolting through Hell’s Kitchen, dashing down St Mark’s Place, high-fiving Spider-Man in Times Square, and competing with joggers in Central Park. All the while, the video manages to capture in every frame that calm before the storm, before the city’s momentum fully catches up with it. It’s New York City but caught in a way we’ve never seen before; and we like it.
