Greg Hoy embraces the big band sound on his latest release, ‘Last Quarter’, the second single from his album, ‘Hit Music’, which he released back in March this year.
Anthemic and glorious, featuring both saxophone and trumpet, ‘Last Quarter’ is part existential and part sentimental, as Hoy sings of having given his last quarter to his only daughter – cos he’s a decent guy – only to discover it’s not actually the last one, he’s got plenty more to give. Apart from the horns, Hoy played every other instrument on the track, even singing and playing guitar in the same take. It’s stripped back and almost confessional, with every line containing a double meaning, and providing plenty of scope to analyse, even over-analyse, the lyrics. On the other hand, you could just lose yourself in the big band sound.
The music video for ‘Last Quarter’, is true to form for Hoy, with simplicity and home-spun props, cleverly telling the story of the song, through the eyes of three unicorns, who have somehow come into a vast fortune, and aren’t wasting any time in spending it, as they spend it willy and nilly, on limousines, fancy food, flights to dream destinations, and having a lot of fun along the way. The message could easily be that we should make hay while the sun shines – because who knows what tomorrow holds in store for us?
