Grammy Award winning artist, Nicko Rebel, takes us to the edge and celebrates his heritage, talent, and ambition with his new single and video, ‘GvnGyal’.
Nicko Rebel, born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, has allowed his deep immersion in music guide him from an early age. Now living in South Florida, he brings a Caribbean vibe to everything he does, both as an artist and a producer. He’s received countless accolades for his work with a whole range of artists, and his work in Koffee’s ‘Rapture’ EP saw it win the Best Reggae Album Grammy in 2019; this was followed in 2021 by another Grammy nomination for his work on Jesse Royal’s album, ‘Royal’.
Now it’s Nicko’s time to shine as an artist, and he brings his gift to centre stage. New single, ‘GvnGyal’, unfurls a romantic encounter, a tale as old as time, with all its love and drama. The dreamy melody is R&B inspired, and his bars rise and fall over the persistent groove, pulling the listener in, as he narrates his story.
The “GvnGyal” is bad news – and the narrator knows it. Despite this, he’s prepared to go all in, captivated by desire. Her love may well be unpredictable, toxic, even, but it’s intense and beguiling, and he has long given up trying to resist. The track paints a vivid picture of what it feels like to be in such a situation, trailing off with a voicemail, as a disembodied voice flips between being combative and pleading: “You know I need you,” she whines, “Stop f’ing with me or I’ll f you up.”
The lyric video for ‘GvnGyal’ sees Nicko Rebel cleverly amplify the already fully engrossing melody. The song has been brought to life in collaboration with HIP Video Productions, and the flashy style is a perfect mirror to the track’s immersive qualities. Each scene feels like the viewer is floating through an unknown universe; we lose ourselves in the swirling colours and beautiful scenery. Truly we are dealing with an artist who knows how to turn emotional chaos and confusion into an art piece that is not just alluring, but captivating.
