Stephen Thomas Is ‘Breaking Hearts’ With Latest Track And Video

Stephen Thomas returns with new single and music video, ‘Breaking Hearts’, which takes a dark turn from his previous releases.

‘Breaking Hearts’ is a punk pop anthem – with the soul of hip-hop – that’s a bit more rough around the edges than any of his previous releases. Upbeat and raw, it’s unmistakably rock and roll, that sucks you right in from the very start, and refuses to let go. About a third of the way through the track, the bridge takes the form of a rap verse, which, in less experienced hands, could go dangerously awry. Thankfully, Stephen Thomas is well able to make it work.

‘Breaking Hearts’ is all about empowerment, and serves as an anthem of reclaiming your heart, and getting it away from a toxic situation. “Stay away from those who drain you of the energy you need to function—for yourself and those who love you,” says Thomas. Instead of getting lost in the chaos of an unravelling relationship, he chooses to step away and say goodbye.

The music video for ‘Breaking Hearts’ sees Stephen Thomas collaborate once more with his close friend and renowned director, Will Thomas. Will takes the song and invests as much energy and power into the clip, which sees footage of Stephen on stage, delivering a strong and affirmative performance, interspersed with scenes that tell the story of the song. We see him in a car, opening a box containing an engagement ring, before realising this isn’t the choice he actually wants to make. He closes the lid of the box, much to the amazement of his girlfriend, and drives off, leaving her screaming in anger in the doorway of her house.

The music video for ‘Breaking Hearts’ was shot in just one day, and had been slated to feature a surprise guest, DJ Unk, who had collaborated with Stephen on his take of The Gap Band’s iconic song, ‘Outstanding’. Sadly however, Unk died just days before the shoot. Stephen persevered, channelling his emotions into the shoot.
