Mic (pronounced Mike) Nickels takes his calling seriously. For the past two decades and more he’s dedicated himself to his craft, honing his artistry as an emcee, rapper, author, among much more, sharing stage and studio with artists from all over the world. His latest album, ‘The Impressionist’, sees him collaborating with Serbian producer, Kiza, and the long-player’s stand-out track, ‘Against The World’, sees him join forces with Rockness Monsta (one half of Heltah Skeltah from the Boot Camp Clik) and Rah Digga (female superstar member from Busta Rhymes’ Flipmode Squad).
Each verse in ‘Against The World’ gives a spotlight to the distinct styling of the artist, backed by precision scratching from DJ Keef Wookie. Mic’s opening verses set up the track however, bringing with them their echoes of 90s hip hop, and showcasing his flair for lyrics, delivering his bars in a manner that is at once traditional and fierce, while resolutely his very own. While it might initially seem that the sentiment of being “against the world” is one that’s been done to death, in Mic Nickell’s hands it’s more relevant than ever.
The music video for ‘Against The World’, directed by filmmaker Jamal Hall, is a nod to old-skool 90s hip hop, with its street-driven style. We see Mic and his crew in and around a warehouse, in a gritty part of New York City. Scenes flash between its hazy rooms, and a railway overpass, giving the clip a vibe that feels like the true underbelly of the city.
The trio, while it’s clear Mic is the leader, make a fully cohesive collaboration, and such is their raw and authentic energy that it’s to be hoped this won’t be the last time they join forces.
