Raised in Miami, Florida, singer-songwriter Daniel Arison grew up surrounded by a diverse range of cultures and musical styles, ensuring that his own sound was equally varied. A master of crafting tracks that are deeply personal, and eminently relatable, his inspiration for the raw, unfiltered truth sees him channelling experiences and relationships taken from real life events and putting them into his music.
Daniel Arison’s new single and video, ‘Selfish’, comes from his upcoming album, and serves as a journey of reflection on the past while looking at the present, and is perhaps the best example of Arison’s storytelling talent so far.
‘Selfish’ actually inspired the direction of Arison’s album, and was in itself inspired by a personal experience in a close friendship, which forced him to confront his own lack of effort, and self-centredness. The track sees him being on the defence at first, taken aback by the accusation, but as he does some soul-searching he realises, on reflection, that maybe he is selfish after all.
Arison doesn’t hold back. He takes his faults and examines them with a raw lyricism that is on the one hand melancholic, while on the other is a pop sound with a timeless quality. He reminds listeners that if we’re going to truly try and make things right with those we’ve wronged, the first step we need to take is responsibility.
Arison’s vocals are sweet and light, set against a catchy rhythm that will have you bopping away, no matter where you’re listening. It’s paired with a great, cinematic music video, directed by Nicholas Lam, who has taken ‘Selfish’ and transformed it into what is essentially a short film. There’s flashbacks of wild nights out, messing about as teens, and all the while the clip manages to capture the song’s introspective qualities.
We see Daniel and his friend as they share great fun times over video games, playing in the back garden, and overall having the time of their lives. Now, as he’s older, and sees himself caught up in a behaviour that could be deemed almost dangerous, he realises that he has been selfish, and his actions have far-reaching consequences.
