Released on 3 May, ‘Instagram Success’ is the latest album from Atlanta-based singer-songwriter, Jonathan Brenner. We wrote about the previous release, the title track, back in February, comparing it to a Billy Joel song. Now he follows that up with the equally quirky and fun, ‘Silly Little Habit’. ‘Instagram Success’ is out now, through Waterloo 103 Music.
Jazz horns and soulful rhythms are the primary characteristics of the instrumental underpinnings of ‘Silly Little Habit’, which sees Brenner channel his inner lounge singer in the fanciest club in town. To deconstruct the track and lay bare just the music separated from the vocals would not detract from either; Brenner’s vocals are pure and forthright alone as they are supported by the instruments, but when re-assembled they are just glorious, heaven on a stick.
It’s difficult to know who to compare him to, so perhaps I really shouldn’t try. I’ve mentioned Billy Joel before, but this time I’m going to throw James Taylor in the mix. Really however, Brenner has his own style, it’s compelling, and irresistible. He’s a silly little habit I’m wanting more of.
