We’ve got a whole lot of love for Greg Hoy here on Essentially Pop, and we really love his latest rock track and video, ‘Comfort Vendetta’.
Greg has written and performed under a number of names over the past few decades, both by himself and with a crew, most notably “The Boys”, and his latest track is under his name alone. Having established himself in Brooklyn, New York, for more than a decade, Greg moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in the 2010s, as part of the tech boom. His prolific output has seen him become a mainstay in the music scene there, and he’s taken his experiences working there into his music, which increasingly tackles the triumphs and woes of mankind’s progress.
Having released an unimaginable more than 30 albums so far, you’d think that Hoy would have covered everything already – but actually it’s meant that he’s able to approach any topic with candour and authenticity of lyrics and sound. Greg Hoy’s most recent album, ‘Yay For Effort’, sees him use his humour, wit, talent, and sincerity to contemplate modern societal woes, such climate change, the Covid-19 pandemic, love, and mental health.
New single, ‘Comfort Vendetta’ is one such track from ‘Yay For Effort’, and the fuzzy, 90s-inspired track takes on the idea of dating an emotionally unavailable partner. Starting out with sunny synths layered over guitar and bass, Hoy brings to life the agony of forever reaching out in compassion to a partner who’s just not there. It’s a hard topic to write on, but it needed to be said, and Greg Hoy is the right person to do it.
The music video for ‘Comfort Vendetta’, directed by Hoy, and starring Anna Copa Cabana, sees life after lost love. We meet Anna after a breakup; she called it a day after realising she wouldn’t get the connection she needed with her ex. Taking her stuffed ducky, Gordon (aka her inner child), Anna goes out for a day of exploration around Brooklyn, and we are along for the ride.
