No Goodbyes – Wellingta Speaks To Us About Her Latest Single, Her Inspirations, And What Is The Meaning Of Life For Her

Last month we reviewed the fabulous single ‘No Goodbyes‘ from rising London-based R&B star, Wellingta. We’ve since had a chance to speak with her. Here’s Wellingta’s refreshing answers to our questions, and we thank her for giving us an insight into her music process.

Thank you for speaking to us today!

Your new single, ‘No Goodbyes’, has echoes of 90s R&B. Is there something about that era that really speaks to you, and if so, what is it?

R&B/hip-hop music of the ‘90s and early ‘00s had its own distinct grooves and vibes. It was flavorsome, it was vivid, and it led to some of the best music we have today. And because of that, I always felt very inspired by music from that era.

Do you have any favourite artists from that time, or do you take your inspiration from somewhere else, such as contemporary artists, experiences and so on?

I’m inspired by a lot of artists from now and back then. My fav artists from that era are: Destiny’s Child, Aaliyah, TLC, Mary J Blidge, Total, Brandy, Janet & Michael Jackson.

You’re originally from Berlin but are now based in London – what are the pros and cons of each city for a musical artist? Do you find it easier to make music, and have more opportunities in London than Berlin, or the other way around? Or are both about the same?

I find creating music much easier here in London. Caribbean people have shaped London’s culture, especially the music scene and since my music is very much inspired by it, London is definitely a city that gives me that energy I need to create.

What is the creation process like when you make music? Do you start out with a song idea, or a piece of music will come to you, or is it something completely different?

First, I start with the beat; from there, I create the lyrics. I usually have an idea of the song, like the overall message I want to bring into life. But the lyrics, etc., all come to me while creating the song.

Your video for ‘No Goodbyes’ was shot at the Rivoli Ballroom in London. What was behind the choice of location?

I wanted an epic location for this song and my videographer had already recorded there so he recommended this venue to me. I didn’t even know about who recorded in this ballroom before me so when I found out after our video shoot it was a nice surprise. It’s a legendary venue!

If you could go back in time and talk to yourself just starting out, what would you say? Do you have any advice you’ve learned along the way that you feel free to share?

Stop overthinking and trust God! You only live once so strive for your dreams and go after them. The sky’s the limit!

And finally, what question do you wish someone would ask you in an interview, and what’s the answer to that question?

What’s the meaning of life to you? Life is an opportunity to create meaning. Find your calling, know what sparks the light in you so you can illuminate the world.
