Released March 21, ‘Joy Callin” is the new single from Lisa Michelle Anderson. The artist, who was raised in South East Kansas on Dolly Parton’s music before moving to Australia, where she learned to play guitar, is now back in the US, where she’s based in The Berkshires, Massachusetts.
And while we love Dolly, Lisa’s inspirations haven’t been limited to just her, with her sound described as “fresh linen and well-worn denim occasionally splashed with whiskey, beer, and hot sauce”. She’s also shared the stage and recorded with the likes of Matt Cameron, Adam Levy, and Mike Stinson and Johnny Irion, as well as being voted best Singer-Songwriter by the Minnesota Music Academy, and opening for Warren Zevon, The Jayhawks, Marty Willson-Piper, Marianne Faithfull, among many others.
New single, ‘Joy Callin”, takes a look at how we respond when joy comes calling. And what does joy mean anyway?
*I wanted my song to reflect what most of the world is thinking. Where is Joy? What is Joy? And who is Joy?” says Anderson. “This is not a religious song but a country/folk/bluegrass song that tells a story of someone named Joy leaving a message on an answering machine.”
As Anderson says, ‘Joy Callin” is a country/folk/bluegrass song. The banjo and guitars keep apace with the waltz percussive rhythms, while Anderson’s sweet, soft yet powerful vocals sit perfectly over top. The multi-layered production means that the listener can focus on each part of the track in turn. It’s a chill, relaxed, and contemplative track, which comes with an equally laid back video. Anderson sits on a bed playing guitar, interspersed with shots of her speaking on the phone, dressed in full country singer style, cowboy hat included.
Lisa Michelle Anderson is currently putting the finishing touches on a new long player with Johnny Irion, set to be released later this year.
