When you think of Colorado, you more than likely think of the John Denver classic, ‘Rocky Mountain High’. which is of course, one of the 2 official songs of that state. But we think it’s time it moved over and make room for a new song, and we think AztroGrizz’s ‘The Colorado Song’ fits the bill.
With its incredible contrasts and mesmerising beauty, Colorado is a place like no other. There are wide prairies which lead to the awesome mountains of The Rockies, the juxtaposition of city and wilderness, and overall a strong sense of enterprise and ingenuity that harks back to the pioneering days. Grizzly John and Lewis I Am, the hip-hop and soul duo AztroGrizz are Colorado natives. The Centennial State made them who they are, and, on their new single, they’re giving plenty of thanks right back.
On the second verse of ‘The Colorado Song, Lewis I Am raps, “The character’s strong, but soft like leather,” describing the rugged quality of the state, as well as its yielding nature. AztroGrizz know all too well however just how vulnerable their state is with regard to its natural resources, and they are candid about Colorado’s response to the predations and attitudes of outsiders. Lewis I Am is just as open about the cost of development, and the toll that constant building has taken on the state, as he is about Colorado’s beautiful panoramas and scenery. Meanwhile, Grizzly John is meditative as he sings of an imagined conversation between tourists, complaining about the lack of stores and resorts, the harshness of the weather, and the challenges of the landscape. While those people might like to remake Colorado to suit themselves, AstroGrizz know that what’s truly at stake is their own sense of freedom.
The video for ‘The Colorado Song’ is absolutely breathtaking. We are taken, courtesy of the camera, on a journey across the state, via roads that skirt the front of the Rockies; we drive through blizzards, and we are taken to metropolitan Denver, a great American city with its own particular personality. Colorado is a place that isn’t easily tamed – and the video makes this all too clear.
