Budding rap artist TheBabyDon was born in Seattle, and raised in Chesapeake, Virginia, and she’s been writing songs and performing live since she was only 11 years old. When she was 18, she had the chance to open for Pharrell Williams at Shaggfest, and now, still only 21, she has 10 years in the music business under her belt. New single, ‘Mood’, is more than just a rap track; TheBabyDon is a classically trained musician who attended the Governor’s School Of The Arts, where she learned how to thoughtfully structure every composition.
‘Mood’ sees TheBabyDon blend both hip hop and rap with pop and R&B, giving the track a flavour that will appeal across a wide-spectrum of tastes. The track serves as a showcase to her talent, particularly her singing abilities, while demonstrating her songwriting skills. Almost as if she defined the term, “genre-bending”, TheBabyDon’s style even harks back to the British/Caribbean rap styles of the early 1980s, as exemplified by the music of Musical Youth.
‘Mood’ came about while TheBabyDon was thinking of a person close to her heart, while she was working and recording in the studio. She presents the lyrics as if the object of her affection was there in person, and her goal was to ensure that those listening to her song would likewise get in the same mood. Sweet smooth vocals blend seamlessly with the simple backing track, dominated by drum-driven beats, and subtle machine-based instrumentals.
The music video for ‘Mood’ is likewise simple; she is shown in an art studio, maintaining eye contact with the camera, dancing and performing as if that special person was right there in the room. Her energy and presence is palpable, and we’re feeling it.
