Returning with ‘1 Time 2 Many’, the next instalment from their album, ‘The Art Of Throwing Darts’, Birmingham Alabama duo Shaheed and DJ Supreme continue to demonstrate that hard rhyme is the absolute backbone of what goes into truly great hip-hop.
Birmingham’s hip-hop scene is woefully underrated, but those of you who are regular readers of Essentially Pop will know that we are big supporters of this rich and faceted hotbed of music. Shaheed and DJ Supreme are cornerstones of it, and when they toured with fellow Birmingham natives, Jurassic 5, they and their music were introduced and to a whole new audience across the US, who embraced them with open arms.
The video for Shaheed and DJ Supreme’s new single, ‘1 Time 2 Many’, is painfully tragic, and very sadly well-timed, as they shoot a volley against police brutality and violence. Directed by Daniel Roth, footage of police using excessive force is matched to the tight, succinct, and deeply emotional rhyming verses; it’s a tough one to watch but then again, sometimes we need to be confronted with those things we don’t necessarily want to see. Once again, hip-hop leads the way in showing the world around them, and tirelessly – and unflinchingly – giving us the facts in sharp, penetrating, staccato bites – and Shaheed and DJ Supreme are right at the front of that barricade.
