Coming from San Francisco, Nick Andre has been producing music for the past decade and a half, and is the founder of Slept On Records. He’s just finished producing the new Gift Of Gab (Blackalicious) album, set for release later this year. We’ve written about him a few times over the past few years, and his latest track, ‘Snake Bite’, sees him joined by Zion I, Lateef The Truth Speaker, And Deuce Eclipse. ‘Snake Bite’ is out today, 29 May.
‘Snake Bite’ comes out like a bull at the gate – or more fittingly, a snake on the attack. The vocal track hisses from the start, accompanied by a simple instrumental rhythm.
Quick fire rhymes covering topics of death in custody, turning a blind eye to what is really going on in our society. “you turn a blind eye to all of us – that’s a level of privilege I can’t endure”. Often the blind eye is turned in the name of religion – and in the words of the track, “your religion is so illogical” – where is the love?
Speaking of the new single, Nick Andre said,
“This song started out as a demo beat I sent to Zion I to check out. He ended up recording a verse and chorus and sent it back to see what I thought. The original plan was to have him finish it but due to his touring schedule at the time that didn’t work out. I ended up playing it for Lateef The Truth Speaker while we were in the studio one night and asked him if he had any ideas. Next time we linked up he had written what you hear from him on the track now. Shortly after that I was in the studio working on some music with Deuce Eclipse who is OG Zion I crew member. I told him about this unfinished track and that I thought it still needed a closing verse to finish it up. I put the track on and looped the open verse while Deuce vibed and wrote to it. We recorded the final verse that day and ended up with the final version you are hearing today.”
Besides this single, Andre has recently co-scored the music for the feature film, ‘Chasing Valentine’, and has had his music featured on SHOWTIME series, ‘THE CHI’, as well as the Netflix series, ‘EASY’.
He’s working on a series of singles, each featuring different guests, which will be released throughout the rest of 2020.
