It’s been nearly 7 years since Jedward released the concept album, ‘Young Love’. Their third album, it signalled the end of their relationship with former label, Universal Music Ireland, but significantly, not the end of their career. Since that time, they have worked hard at establishing themselves as independent artists, releasing 12 stand alone, self-written singles, starting with ‘Free Spirit’, back in July 2014.
A fourth album was touted at the time, but it was not to be. Now however, the much anticipated record from the Brothers Grimes seems really to be about to happen.
Seemingly out of the blue tonight, Jedward, aka John and Edward Grimes, tweeted from their secondary account, @jepichq, that:
We started when we where 17! Who wants 17 new songs 🙌🏼
— Jedward (@JepicHQ) March 25, 2019
It’s not really unexpected however. Jedward have shared with fans over the past year or so more than enough hints – and outright info-drops – to know the album is definitely happening. They spent most of last year in Los Angeles writing, and composing, recording, and producing, and then fine tuning the album, all the while keeping fans updated as to their progress. We’ve (and yes! Of course we’re fans at EP!) known for a good six months that there’s at least “sixteen absolute bangers”, and that there is something for everyone in the album. And with their first UK tour since 2013 coming in May, we knew the release date couldn’t be too far away.
So now, all we can do is wait. That there are not 16, but 17 songs on the album is a revelation. These are all brand new songs that nobody has heard; the three tracks they released in November – ‘Perfect Wonderland’, ‘Karma’, and ‘Golden Years’, were all written around 2014, and both ‘Perfect Wonderland’ and ‘Golden Years’ had been fan favourites, with John and Edward singing them in concert. Nothing is known about the style of the album tracks, but the most recently written songs, ‘Hologram’, and ‘Oxygen’, which were released in 2016 and 2017, are dance tracks, so it will be interesting to see what genre path Jedward travel down for the new album.
One thing’s for sure, the new songs will get a good airing when Jedward go on tour in May. Starting in Manchester, at the legendary venue, FAC251 The Factory, on May 10 and 11, they’ll then move on to The Camden Assembly – another venue with a lot of history, both in its present incarnation and when it was known as The Barfly – on May 13 and 14. Finally, the Dublin twins will wind up their tour back where their musical journey began 10 years ago – YES TEN YEARS since they first graced the X Factor stage – in Glasgow. Here they will play at yet another esteemed rock club, The Garage, on May 15 and 16. Tickets for all of Jedward’s concerts, with general admission and VIP Meet and Greet tickets, are available from Ticketweb.
