There are many reasons artists write music, and for Jeff Schubert, it’s to help him keep a promise he made to his younger self. For that we’re glad, because without it we wouldn’t have his latest release, ‘One Stupid Owner’.
Jeff Schubert is a man of many talents, and making music is just one of them. He’s made a point of “floating where the current takes him”, and with great results. He’s an actor, writer, producer, and has starred in several independent projects, including his award-winning dark comedy short film, ‘Like, Comment, and Share’, which premiered at the 2024 Silicon Beach Film Festival, and earned him a Best Actor award for his performance.
Schubert has fused his love of music and sports, and following his trilogy of satirical videos, based on the outrageousness of professional quarterback salaries, he then presented an accurate – while comedic – analysis of who could be considered the greatest basketball player of all time: Michael Jordan, or LeBron James. Now, with ‘One Stupid Owner’, he takes on Major League Baseball, released on the 15th of July.
Major League Baseball is the only professional sports league in the US without a salary cap, and Jeff, in his guise of “Crazy Old-Head”, takes matters into his own hands, in a satirical exploration through the eyes of the “greatest super agent of them all”.
Triggered by an on-field skirmish between player Bryce Harper and Commissioner Rob Manfred, in which the mere mention of a salary cap initiated an aggressive confrontation, ‘One Stupid Owner’ sees Crazy Old-Head transcend Schubert’s already stratospheric level of caricature, and this time becomes Scott Doras, a full-on super-villain, hand-rubbing and all.
A man to be feared by Major League Baseball teams hoping to improve their lineup and league standing, Scott Doras’ mercenary mentality is relentless. In this world, he has steamrolled “one stupid owner” after the next, earning his clients hundreds of millions in his wake. He’s all about securing the best deal, and every penny counts. “I have the leverage,” he affirms, “I can take the hate”.
The music video for ‘One Stupid Owner’, directed by Schubert himself, pokes fun at Doras’ salesmanship, taking a simple premise and manipulating it into full absurdity. One Stupid Owner is all it takes for Doras to make millions, for both himself and the players he represents, just so long as the salary cap never materialises. But! There’s a twist at the end.
