Divergent are a dream that’s been nearly 40 years in the making, and this trio of lifelong friends are no longer losing any time making their teenage fantasy a reality. Latest single, ‘Not Until It’s Right’ knows all about waiting, with its story of not settling for the bare minimum.
Opening with the click of Paul Richards’ drumsticks, ‘Not Until It’s Right’ is an anthemic ode to waiting until it’s perfect. Focusing on a club night, the protagonist of the song approaches a woman he is inescapably attracted to. For him, it’s love – or lust – at first sight, and he wants nothing more than to take her home for his very own. She however, has other ideas, and has no intention of settling; at the very least she’s got to see how well he can dance, as her love “needs rhythm to survive”. Later, after getting her phone number, he calls to ask if he can come over, only to be rebuffed once more, the time is not yet right. With energetic keys feeding into the propulsive drum beats, supported by evenly-paced guitars, James Richards’ vocals are powerful and emphatic, and while they primarily tell the story from the man’s point of view, it’s clear that the woman is the one who is truly in control of the situation.
The music video for ‘Not Until It’s Right’ was shot in Sweetwater Studios, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where Divergent shot the video for their previous release, ‘Runnin’ Free‘. They seem to be completely at home in this studio, bringing the song to life with professionalism and passion, and each member of the band performing with effortless confidence, just as if they’ve been born to do this: and they probably have.
