Formed in Halifax Nova Scotia, Neon Dreams have gone from high school dropouts to international sensations in a few short years – and for good reason. The duo, comprising frontman Frank Kadillac and drummer Adrian Morris have been frequent faces on Essentially Pop, and their new single, ‘This Is It’ is just the latest feel-good track to come from them.
Taking no regard to the boundaries of genre, Neon Dreams have found their way through the treacherous waters of alt pop, folk, funk, hip-hop, and reggae, coming out the other side with a beautiful blend of all and none. Their MO is truth-telling; whether that be sharing the feeling of romantic love, or expressing their experiences of coming out the other side of trauma, the one thing listeners can be certain of is that they will do it with clarity, self-assuredness, and without restriction. Although they’ve been on what seems to be a never-ending world tour, Neon Dreams have found time along the way to not only release their latest album, ‘Love Child Baby Dolphin’, but also drop a new single, ‘This Is It’, which comes with a sunshiney music video.
‘This Is It’ may cause some confusion in listeners. It’s definitely a bop and a half, and is guaranteed to have listeners jiving away. But it’s also a cathartic track, that cuts straight to the heart as it shares the message of the true meaning of love. It’s not because the other one is wealthy, or because they’re famous or even because of our base feelings – but we love them because our heart said, “this is it”.
It’s a deeply emotional song, and yes, we shed a tear or two – of happiness – in listening to the pure joy of the track. Kadillac strums his guitar as he sings the simple tune, and it’s impossible to resist singing along.
The music video, directed by Daniel Cole, further deepens this response. Serving as a travelogue of sorts for the past year or so of the band, we are shown what Kadillac and Morris have been up to. Footage of live shows is interspersed with clips of encounters with elephants, high-fives with fans, and some still quiet moments, set against glorious South African sunsets. If the song doesn’t make you want to throw away the trappings of your bustling life, the video certainly will!
