Following on from our review of Strong O’s new single, ‘Crowd Sucka’, we speak to the artist himself, and find out what makes him tick.
The phrase “me against the world” is a big part of your artistic identity. Why is it important for you to approach your artistry as a solo venture?
Approaching it solo helps me to continue expressing my true feelings. I can avoid having people in my ear trying to water down my lyrics.
In your songwriting process, do you usually begin a song with lyrics, a melody, a message you want to communicate, or something else?
I always start with the lyrics and then research the beat or melody to match the mood of what I am trying to convey.
Which artists helped shape your style or inspired your approach to lyricism?
The artists are Ice cube and Eminem. I like how they approach the mic with their unapologetic style.
‘Crowd Sucka’ is a strong statement. What was going through your mind when you wrote it?
Tired of the people taking the mic and sucking up by appeasing the crowd and telling them what they want to hear.
The ‘Crowd Sucka’ video balances studio grit with street visuals. What story were you hoping to tell?
To be yourself and be original. Take a stand because you do not have to follow the crowd.
What role does authenticity play in your artistry?
I write my own lyrics, choose my own beats, and direct my videos.
In your opinion, what’s missing from today’s rap and hip hop? What do you bring to the table?
What is missing is originality, roughness, and creativity. I bring everything previously stated with my music.
How does ‘Crowd Sucka’ represent your musical aspirations as an indie artist? What’s next on your musical horizon?
I have the freedom to speak my mind. Domination of the industry is on my musical horizon.
