William Odell Hughes Brings A Sweet Soul Sound ‘Loving You Was Easy’ Remix

William Odell Hughes had the chief part of his education on the streets of his hometown of Detroit, and, after meeting jazz pianist Pamela Wise one day on a bus on the East Side, back in the 80s, forged a collaboration that launched his music career as singer songwriter, producer and composer.

Hughes channels the sweet sounds of the 70s and 80s into his music, and alongside Wise and her husband, the jazz icon, Wendell Harrison, his debut album, ‘Cruisin’ is a stunning showcase of those sounds, with its soulful grooves.

Hughes’ latest release, ‘Loving You Was Easy’ (Remix), is a smooth groove of a track that, at first glance appears to be a love song in the traditional sense – until you realise that the title is “was”, not “is” easy. Singing with rich velvety vocals, the longing he feels for a lost love is undeniable. In remixing the track, it was given sped up, high pitched backing vocals, giving it a more contemporary edge. The track is unmistakably an absolute groove.

The music video for ‘Loving You Was Easy’ (Remix), sees Hughes take centre stage as he performs alongside a chorus of puppets, robed as if in a church choir. Later, we see puppet couples as they find their way thorough betrayal and heartbreak. The whimsical puppets were created in collaboration with Sylvia Gordon, of Elite Starr Presents, a fellow creative and friend of Hughes.
