UK-based band, The Fake Whales, venture into uncharted territory with their debut single, ‘Shine’.
While they are boldly exploring the possibilities for AI in music, The Fake Whales are anything but fake, treating AI as an “extra member of the band”, and as a creative collaborator, who enhances textures, layers, and ideas.
Instrumentals and vocals are all performed by real musicians, while Kevin Edward Jarvis handles the production and songwriting. Jarvis got his start as a keyboard session player, leading him to studio engineering, which has seen him work with likes of Sir Paul McCartney, and Keith Emerson, among many others. Although he’s now retired, Jarvis was still feeling the creative urge, resulting in The Fake Whales, and through this group, channels timeless soundscapes of pop and rock into fan-favourite covers, and clever originals.
Originally written by Jarvis, in collaboration with Guy Fletcher and Jeremy Bird, this cover of ‘Shine’ re-imagines the 1984 track popularised by ABBA singer, Frida. With a shimmering soundscape propelling the track into the modern day, as well as layered harmonies, dreamy synths, and rock roots, The Fake Whales’ take on ‘Shine’ is closer to Jarvis’s original concept.
The music video for ‘Shine’ is entirely AI-generated, allowing the band to emulate the grand visual aesthetics of classic pop and rock. It’s larger-than-life in so many ways.
