He Ain’t Heavy: Minneapolis Veterans (BR)OTHERS Release Funky New Single, ‘(Br)other’

Michael Bland and Sonny T came out of the Minneapolis scene and are alumni of The New Power Generation, and collaborated with Prince as a trio of sorts, working and performing on a variety of projects throughout the early 1990s. As (BR)OTHERS they come together for the first time in years, and the long-time friends showcase their funky sound in their new single, ‘(Br)other’, backed by Soul Asylum’s guitarist Ryan Smith’s new label, Hygh Tension Records.

A superbly crafted debut single, ‘(Br)other’ is a theme song of sorts to introduce listeners to Michael and Sonny, and their soulful voices perfectly complement each other, as they harmonise like it’s second nature to them. Ultra-groovy, and undeniably funky, ‘(Br)other’ is light-hearted and fun, showcasing their style and swagger as they sing, “We’ve got a sound we just can’t hide.”

The music video for ‘(Br)other’ is a laid back and fun animation, taking viewers on a vivid journey as Michael and Sonny are captured thanks to Jason East’s stop-motion talents, using paper cut-outs, and animated avatars, designed by Sarah Miscavage. In the clip, the animated duo reminisce on their friendship, and it’s not just great to watch, but also fits perfectly with (BR)OTHERS’ smooth funk sound. Taking several months to design and animate, the video gives viewers an inside look at what Michael and Sonny’s relationship is all about – a warm-hearted sharing of a passion for music, and that no matter what, they will always be brothers.
