Porter Block are a rock band from New York City, named for their lead singer, Peter Block. They’ve been in the music scene for decades, and regular readers will recall our review of their single, ‘If You See Eulene‘, earlier this year. Now they return, with their latest single, ‘Groove Goin’ On’, which sees them reach even greater heights than they ever have before.
With his ferocious songwriting skills combined with his shy, unassuming demeanour, Peter Block is impossible not to like. He’s also seen his dream of creating music that reminds listeners of The Beach Boys, come true thanks to his partnership with renowned songwriter Andy Paley, who’s worked and written with Brian Wilson, and produced records for the likes of Jonathan Richman, NRBQ and Jerry Lee Lewis.
Porter Block’s latest studio album, ‘Sometimes Sunshine’, from which ‘Groove Goin’ On’ comes, is a flawless blend of classic indie-pop-rock with a modern aesthetic; every track is an absolute earworm, and of course ‘Groove Goin’ On’ is no exception to this.
Featuring a catchy chorus, and Beach Boys-esque backing vocals, ‘Groove Goin’ On’ is vibrant, energetic, and contagious – a sure-fire party starter. Supported by upbeat percussion, staccato piano rhythms, and a groovin’ melody, it’s a standout track on ‘Sometimes Sunshine’, and will echo through your brain for all eternity (okay, maybe for a few hours).
The music video for ‘Groove Goin’ On’ will be instantly recognisable. It’s a tribute to Randy Newman’s clip for his 1983 single, ‘I Love LA’, even though it was shot in Nashville. Peter Block is seen driving a Bentley around town, accompanied by a beautiful blonde woman, exploring the diverse neighbourhoods of the Music City. Later they’re joined by the full band, poolside, and they all explore the groovy thing they’ve got going on.
