A multi-faceted musician who draws his sound from influences including hip-hop, R&B, jazz, and electronic music, David D’Angelo brings his new single, ‘I.M.O.W.’, a standout track from his latest album, ‘In My Own World’.
D’Angelo spends his days as a music teacher, sharing his passion with others, and inspiring the next generation of musicians to great things. In turn he has been inspired by artists who’ve gone before him, including FKJ, Mick Jenkins, and Robert Glasper, meaning his sound is a seamless blend of intricately arranged lo-fi, hip-hop beats, and soulful melodies.
‘I.M.O.W.’, a standout track on ‘In My Own World’, features talented vocalist Chloe Jean, as well as classically trained violinist, David Scott Binanay. The album came out of the forced solitude of the Covid-19 Pandemic, when many of us looked deep within ourselves, and ‘I.M.O.W.’ itself explores themes of isolation, self-discovery, and ultimately, finding peace within ourselves. David wrote the lyrics for ‘I.M.O.W.’ on a flight to San Francisco, where he was moving to live, and where he would later meet and collaborate with Chloe Jean.
‘I.M.O.W.’ is accompanied by a music video, directed by Shay Stifelman, which cleverly illustrates and amplifies the song’s themes of isolation and self-immersion, by using water as a symbol of this. David is shown becoming submerged in the water, while still playing a variety of instruments; this is a representation of his sinking into his own world, and serves as a mirror to the song’s exploration of loneliness, and self-reflection, while at the same time showcasing the transformation that’s possible when one is truly present in one’s environment and emotions.
Additionally, the clip is able to convey that interconnectedness of our individual experiences, how the mandatory isolation caused us all to effectively find peace and solace. David D’Angelo invites his viewers to join him in his personal world, and find their own harmony.
