Baker GraceĀ Is A ‘Painkiller’ With New Pop Single And Video

Rising pop singer-songwriter Baker Grace is not just some girl-next-door. Sheā€™s a pioneering female artist seeking to empower others with her edgy and vulnerable interpretations of these challenging times, and her new single and video, ‘Painkiller’, is the perfect setting off point for those who aren’t already familiar with her sound.

Baker Grace leaned into her musical side very early on. She was raised by her musician father, and quickly learned how to play guitar, piano, and to make use of her vocal talents. Debuting in 2019 with her EP, ‘Girl I Know’, she signed her first recording deal at the age of 16, and consequently landed four songs on the soundtrack for Huluā€™s feature film, ‘Last Survivors’. Since then, she’s collaborated with the likes of Cautious Clay, while Grammy-winning producers, such as Dan Nigro and Scott Harris have stirred up a lot of eager anticipation for her first long player record.

New single, ‘ā€œ’Painkiller’, sees Baker Grace weave a seductive metaphor between what has come to be seen as the dual afflictions of Gen Z: addiction and validation-seeking. Thanks to Juno award winning producer Dajaun Martineau, Grace’s sultry vocals are given space to express her lyrics, which are subtle, yet uplifting. Rather than simply wallowing in her mental struggles, she instead hope in self-love and presence. and in just over three minutes, Baker is able to tell the story of addiction and recovery.

The music video for ‘Painkiller’, directed by Zac Stracener, adds even more colour to this already vibrant song. Grace is shown, alone, with a pill bottle, sitting at the counter of a diner, harking back to the link between addiction and the consumer culture in the 1950s and 1960s. Gradually she emerges from the darkness, and moves into the light, all the while taking hold of her sense of self-worth. Brass notes blare, evoking a James Bond film theme, while Grace, clearly more confident, stuns with gorgeous choreography and smokey glances.
