Robert Abernathy Has A ‘Big Bass Problem’ With Latest Country Music Release

‘Big Bass Problem’, from Robert Abernathy, isn’t about the music – it’s about the other sort of bass – the fishy sort.

Back in 1995 in his home state of Alabama, Robert Abernathy won the annual Nashville Starbound Competition at the Grand Old Opry House, as part of a vocal group. The band split up the following year, and life got in the way for the young singer songwriter, in the form of marriage, teaching middle school science, coaching wrestling, and raising a family. But his old six-string was still there, and every so often Robert would dust it off, play some Eagles tunes, and write a few songs.

Roll around to 2009 and he was prompted by a friend to do some gigging in his local town, and as the frontman of country/rock band Shotglass, he soon attracted plenty of attention, resulting in being to play solo shows, and accolades, including being named the #1 Country Artist by The Bash (formerly Gigmaster) from 2016-2021, and Alabama Male Country Artist of the Year in 2018. He found his way to performing in front of Nashville bookers, leading to regular gigs on Broadway, and at the age of 48 and a year before retiring from teaching – a record deal.

And what a bargain the label found themselves with! Robert had an untapped catalogue of more than 300 songs, as well as a lifetime of relatable experience, which sees him set to take his position in the galaxy of country music. He’s since relocated to Nashville, and is on his way to showing the world just what he can do.

‘Big Bass Problem’ has its origins in a text Abernathy received from his son while on a military assignment in the Mojave Desert. It’s a celebration of an obsession with fishing that borders on the unhealthy side; but it’s a whole lot of fun too. Abernathy’s lyrics are witty and expertly spun, while he’s joined by Kenny Chesney guitarist, Jon Conely, who adds his incredible styling to the track. It’s a song that will bring a smile to your lips and a tapping to your toes, and make you consider what big problems you might have of your own.

The music video for ‘Big Bass Problems’, directed and produced by Luis Ernesto Gonzalez Hernandez, is a whole lot of fun too. We see Abernathy and his crew of fellow fishing enthusiast friends take over Mark’s Outdoor Sports store, in Birmingham, Alabama. They raid the place, looting the shelves and stealing everything they can – while dancing in the aisles and attempting (unsuccessfully) to evade the police. Abernathy is sent to therapy to discuss his “fish-ues”, and the clip closes with him sending a text to his wife, who had up until then been completely in the dark about his fishy habit. There’s a hint at the end that this might not be all there is to the saga….stay tuned!
