The Mighty Lemon Drops guitarist/songwriter David Newton has today released a new seasonal single, as David Newton & Thee Mighty Angels, ‘Winter Tragedy’. An upbeat sounding, yet darkly twisted ‘bah humbug’ holiday tale, the track comes with a video directed by Joel Tabbush, and features members of The Little Ones, The Blood Arm, Bad Girlfriend, VPL, Kissing Tigers and Faraway Beaches performing in a snow storm in sunny California.
From David Newton:
“This all came together rather quickly via my local Burbank craft beer bar Tony’s Darts Away. Basically, I was at Tony’s chatting with another regular Joel Tabbush who has worked on many videos over the last couple of decades including The Strokes, Iggy Pop, Dave Gahan, Offspring, Missy Elliott, Divine Comedy etc. Joel asked me if I’d be interested in maybe doing a video of one of my songs. I realized that I had just finished a festive tune, which I thought would be timely, and that seemed like the obvious choice, given this time of year. I then thought ‘ahh, I guess I’ll need a band then’ so I asked few of my mates. My “band” for this video (most of whom I have worked with at my studio Rollercoaster Recording over the years) is: Brian Reyes (The Little Ones), Zach Amos (The Blood Arm, Faraway Beaches), Christian Owens (VPL, Bad Girlfriend, Faraway Beaches), James Weir (Kissing Tigers, Faraway Beaches). The “band” came over to my backyard in Burbank for a couple of hours, we cracked open a case of beer, fired up the snow machine in the 80 degree heat and shot this “festive” video.”
There has also been quite a bit of news for fans of The Mighty Lemon Drops. The band’s entire Warner Bros catalogue (5 albums + 1 ep) is finally available on Spotify. Additionally, David is featured in a new episode (‘Inside Out’, named after Newton’s 1988 Modern Rock hit) of KCRW’s ‘Bent By Nature’ series, a tribute to the life and legacy of influential DJ Deirdre O’Donoghue (other featured artists include Michael Stipe, Robyn Hitchcock, Julian Cope, Henry Rollins, Harry Shearer, Johnette Napolitano/Concrete Blonde, Steve Wynn/The Dream Syndacate, Pat Fish/The Jazz Butcher).
