Danya Vodovoz is a producer from Hannover, Germany, and his latest single, ‘The Dealer’, is an 80s/new wave inspired song, with music video to match. Shot in rural Australia by young director Braden McDonald, the clip makes good use of foggy streets and gloomy fields, late at night, in order to evoke a ghostly feeling.
McDonald employs chiaroscuro to increase the sense of malevolence, there’s a certain Lynchian film noir vibe to the video, which sees the protagonist, played by Narelle Collins, involved in a deal that goes bad.
‘The Dealer’ tells the story of a shadowy “anti-hero”, the dealer, who symbolises fear, dependence, mystery, and ruin. With 80s inspired pulsating synths which amplify the drama of both song and video, talented producer Danya Vodovoz calls to mind the music of Gary Numan, David Bowie, and Devo.
