Comprising Johnny B Holy (aka Willie Aron) and Buddy Holy (aka Marvin Etzioni), Thee Holy Brothers are a duo based in Los Angeles, who between them have worked with Balancing Act, Victoria Williams, Rickie Lee Jones, Lone Justice, Counting Crows, and Toad The Wet Sprocket.
Their new single, ‘Lift You Up’, which features vocals from Stephon Ferguson, playing the role of Dr Martin Luther King Jr, is a stand alone track released outside their album cycle, and features a video directed by the award winning Atlanta based director, Fr3deR1ck. The clip was premiered worldwide by Hits Magazine.
Thee Holy Brothers have also released their debut album, ‘My Name Is Sparkle’, and both it and ‘Lift You Up’ are available to stream and download now.
The music video is shot using footage from the birth of the Civil Rights Movement, interspersed with footage from the Black Lives Matter marches of last summer. All in black and white, it brings home that things sadly haven’t changed that much in the past 50 or so years; additionally, it reminds us that Martin Luther King Jr isn’t a figure from ancient history – if he was alive today he would have turned 91 this year.
The song itself is in the style of a civil rights chant, with Stephon Ferguson reciting the words of Martin Luther King Jr. The repeated refrain of “the miracle change lies within your heart / I want to lift you up” is easily committed to memory, and serves as a reminder that we are the change.
