Mike Ayley, bassist from Canadian double-platinum selling band Marianas Trench, and his wife Emily, are set to release a Christmas single, ‘The World Needs Christmas’, on November 6th, via 604 Records and all streaming services. The single marks Mike’s first project outside of Marianas Trench, and Emily’s singing debut – although you wouldn’t know it, with their charming harmonies and clear vocal chemistry, the couple sounds like they’ve been recording together for years.
‘The World Needs Christmas’ highlights the importance of the holiday season given, “It’s been a long and trying year”. In a year filled with fear, anxiety and so many unknowns, Mike and Emily focus on the magic of the holidays, and why, now, more than ever, The World Needs Christmas.
“Emily is American and made the big move to Canada in 2018 and one thing that made her decision easier was the understanding we could go back and visit her family. Unaware of what the new year would bring, Christmas 2019 ended up being the last time Emily and her family were together,” said Mike. “An important part of the holiday season is spending time with loved ones, and in August after cancelling another hopeful trip to the USA, we decided to write a song about the challenges 2020 has brought all of us. ‘The World Needs Christmas’ touches on those struggles but keeps the focus on hope, optimism and the feelings of renewal and love that the Christmas season brings of which, surely, we all believe the world could use more of.”
Since 2003, Mike has been the bassist for chart-topping Vancouver pop-rock quartet Marianas Trench. The band erupted onto the Canadian music scene in 2006 with the hit singles, ‘Say Anything’, and, ‘Shaketramp’, from their debut album, ‘Fix Me’. They have gone on to release multiple gold and double-platinum-certified singles — including ‘Cross My Heart’, ‘Stutter’, and ‘Who Do You Love’, — and two double-platinum albums: ‘Masterpiece Theatre’ (2009) and ‘Ever After’ (2011). ‘Ever After’ helped Marianas Trench win its first JUNO Award, for Group of the Year, in 2013. The band has received four other JUNO nominations and 22 MuchMusic Video Awards nominations and 5 wins.
