‘Into The Light’ is the fifth album for Berkely-based group, Crooked Flower. The eight track album has a vintage 1960s vibe appropriate for a band from San Francisco.
Daniel Erik has pretty much known Dan Ingberman all his life, and first came to Dan’s home studio when he was only 4. Dan was a songwriter and guitarist who’d been playing in St Louis for a few years, and Daniel was enraptured by Dan’s recording setup of drums, keyboards, bass, and guitars. He started playing guitar himself soon after. At the age of 18, back in 2011, Daniel made his way from St Louis over to Berkeley, California, where Dan was teaching, at UC Berkely, and working as an expert economist. The pair started playing together, and Crooked Flower began. In 2014 they asked drummer Patrick Shields, from Denver, and Angie Dang from Phoenix, to join. They’ve since won, from Twirl Radio KUBU 96.5 in Sacramento, the awards for 2015 Song Of The Year, for ‘Too Broke To Fix’, and 2016 Concert Of The Year, for their performance at Berkeley on 26 September 2016.
‘Into The Light’ is one of those albums that you can put on in the background and just chill to. With laid back and drawling vocals provided by Angie Dang, their R&B quality is the perfect adjunct to the psychedelic sounds of the band.
The album leaves you wanting more. It reminds you of so many different artists, bands and eras; the Dire Straits-influenced guitars of ‘Around And Around’, to the reggae style vibes of ’10 Million Seeds’. All the while Angie Dang channels Stevie Nicks across the entire album.
