Captains Of Entropy’s New Release ‘Rosetta’ Pays Homage To The Space Mission Of The Same Name

The centrepiece of their new digital EP, ‘Beatrice Comes Home’, instrumental track, ‘Rosetta’, from California’s Captains Of Entropy is accompanied by a music video set in space.

For Captains Of Entropy, comprising neighbours and friends Mike Kanon, Reilly Wareham, and Jason Young, a song is the start of an idea that tends to spill into something much larger, often including constructed worlds, stray references, and whatever emerges as the three follow a thread in the conversation. This is certainly what happened with ‘Rosetta’, which takes its title from the space mission of the same name, and which pulls its instinct towards outer space.

The music video for ‘Rosetta’ is divided between scenes on Earth and in space. Shots of the band in Young’s house are recognisably real, polished, and cinematic, but once they leave the safety of Earth something happens, and the visuals become cardboard cut-outs, with costumes, homemade sets, and a spaceship constructed in a friend’s garage. The whole space sequence is given a hand-made, tactile, science fiction feel.

Directing the house sequences, Matthew Mourgides built the concept around the tension between routine and escape. He says, “The music immediately gave me this feeling of repetition and escape, of being trapped in the rhythms of everyday life while dreaming of something bigger. I wanted the three band members to almost feel like fragments of the same person, moving through this endless routine, until the world they’ve been dreaming about starts breaking through and eventually becomes their reality”.

Without lyrics to convey the story, we rely on the instruments and the video, with the musicians moving from the ordinary world to one that’s been crafted in their heads.
