Jeff Schubert Chats With EP About ‘One Stupid Owner’

We caught up with Jeff Schubert and had a chat about his latest release, ‘One Stupid Owner‘.

How did ‘One Stupid Owner’ come together?

I had a great time shooting my two other sports comedy music videos, ‘I’m The Quarterback’, and ‘GOAT Debate Over’. So, once I was inspired to write ‘One Stupid Owner’ (OSO), I already had a formula for how to get it done. I was fortunate that my two key crew members, Jonathan Cocco and Ari Halpern, were available to work with me on it.

Why did you use comedy to tell this story?

One of the great things about comedy is it can get people to lower their guard and maybe consider a point of view they would not have otherwise. I’ve done it in short films; the same philosophy applies here. Besides, I don’t think YouTube or social media feeds need another hot-take specialist! This was a fun creative way to express myself a little differently.

What do you enjoy about playing Crazy Old-Head?

I’m an artist, but I also have a background in social work – Playing Crazy Old-Head allows me to ditch the social worker side of my personality and fully embrace my grumpy “get off my lawn” sports fan persona.

How do you mix real sports topics with comedy?

You put a mirror up to real issues, regardless of whether it’s sports, politics, relationships; create a heightened or exaggerated character or situation that people can relate to and BAM!

What was your favourite part of making the song?

In all honesty, probably when I get the idea. I get and have forgotten a lot of ideas, but when I get one that’s love at first sight and I know it’s one I want to pursue, it’s like I get a power surge. I feel most alive in these moments. Recording the song for the first time is pretty cool too.

What was it like directing and starring in the video?

Directing myself works because I’m also the writer and completely locked into the character.  If preparation with the other performers and department heads is taken care of before shooting (which I always strive for) it makes it very doable. Not sure I would want to direct myself in something I didn’t write.

Why do sports and music work well together?

Professional athletes are incredible – They tell an amazing story. Music has the ability to enhance any story and amplify whatever emotion you are trying to get across.

What can fans expect from you next?

I’m working on a solo album of non-comedy music. You will definitely get to see more of my social worker side as I delve psychologically into issues both personal and collective.

I’m excited for people to hear that side of me. Can’t wait to share it.

Anything else you’d like to share before we wrap up?

If you’re a fan of Major League Baseball and have thoughts about whether MLB should have a salary cap, watch ‘One Stupid Owner’, then let me know in the comments whether you agree or disagree. I’d love to hear your thoughts!
