Divergent enjoyed making their debut album so much that they took the briefest of hiatuses before they got back in the studio to make their sophomore long player. With new single, ‘Give Her Love’, the follow up to ‘Rev It Up‘, they’re continuing to fire on all cylinders – if with more purposeful, empowering intent.
‘Give Her Love’ tells the story of a young woman, deep in the backwoods of Appalachia, who’s been trapped in a terrible marriage to an overpowering husband. The lyrics paint the picture only too well, right from the start with, “There’s a girl who’s down the railroad tracks / and if you see her she won’t ever look back / she’s got a story that has never been told / she needs to tell it before she’s too old”. The stirring words are sung with an urgency and a thirst for freedom, buoyed up by the electrifying guitar riffs and thunderously pulsing percussion. ‘Give Her Love’ journeys through the difficult terrain of abuse, and does so with strikingly honest attention to detail, mirroring the dire circumstances felt by the victims in such situations. Divergent puts themselves in their place, and with all their strength, are calling on everyone everywhere to treat each other with more care and kindness, before it’s too late.
The lyric video for ‘Give Her Love’, just like the song itself, builds up the tension with every line, and paints a vivid portrait of the environment of the song’s subject. In an overgrown stretch of abandoned railroad tracks, gravel roads are lined with rusted out old cars and pickups, dotted about with verdant hills. All the while, a battle is brewing behind closed doors, between a young woman who feels trapped and helpless, and a man whose only response is to knock her about. She longs to run far away from it all, to spread her arms wide and be free, away from his torment. Things may have been different with a little bit of love, and Divergent gives listeners a hopeful reminder, that when people lead with compassion, even the smallest acts of love can change how someone’s story ends.
