Tex Moonlight has stepped away from his mellow side and instead embraced his darker roots with latest release, ‘Ape Shall Not Kill Ape’.
The first single from his upcoming album, ‘Ape Shall Not Kill Ape’ sees Tex Moonlight move slightly away from the trail he’s been blazing, the sound he’s coined, “Americonica”, and instead, instill in it some nostalgic, pop punk vibes.
The artist, who was born and raised in Baltimore, surrounded by a wide range of sounds and musical influences, moved his family of 7 to first Los Angeles, and then on to South Florida, where he reunited with one of his earliest metal and hard rock projects, Ephram Bonus. There he re-found his joy, and was inspired thereafter to revisit music that was intended to ignite the whole being – mind, body, and soul.
‘Ape Shall Not Kill Ape’ was built on a drum loop that is reminiscent of the likes of Devo, with its robotic punk pop sound, and in so doing brings with it a nostalgic vibe that will enchant fans of new wave. Produced alongside Dave Nachodsky, as well as a host of other talented collaborators, ‘Ape Shall Not Kill Ape’ sees Moonlight re-imagine iconic lines from the film, ‘Planet of the Apes’, crafting them into sentiments of a chilling nature. He speaks the lyrics into being, supported by a bouncy bassline, screeching sound effects, and blasting guitars.
The music video for ‘Ape Shall Not Kill Ape’ keeps it light as Moonlight invites viewers to put all their troubles to one side, and rather embrace a different world. A human-sized ape is seen wandering the streets of Fort Lauderdale, joined by Johnny Ramone, the French Bulldog owned by the video’s director, Jim Arbogast. These clips are interspersed with footage of Moonlight getting his groove on, in front of green-screened videos. It’s quirky and fun, and catchy as all hell.
