Our second Ron Brunk single for the day, ‘These Days’, continues with the same sort of theme as ‘Real Person’, and we see Brunk fighting the good fight against the encroaching shadows that creep around every corner, filled with despair and desolation.
Wistful, electric, and reflective, ‘These Days’ could easily be a track released in the 80s but freshly rediscovered; a gentle rock classic. With impassioned vocals, Brunk releases all the angst of a man who can’t believe his eyes and ears, who’s been stunned by the encroaching hate and evil, that seemingly exists in every facet of life – while people carry on as if nothing is wrong. Beyond his fury and anger is a man who is too distressed for words, and is frightened and sickened by the downward spiral he sees society travelling in. Observing from the outside, he sees the many who are still sleeping, but he isn’t giving up, even if ‘These Days’ demand more strength than ever.
Mirroring the poignant message of the song, the music video for ‘These Days’ is a celebration of yet another art form that is nothing without passion and human talent – dance. We see ballerinas as they gracefully twirl and stretch, moving to Brunk’s accompanying music, with the scenery shifting and changing, much like a dream. While enchanting, each scene is moody and at times, disturbing, with an eerie suggestion that the dancers are actually moving on the rubble of a world long since destroyed. The dancers spin merrily, unbothered by the desolation around them. Like ‘Real Person’, ‘These Days’ is a wake-up call to the world, to take stock of what is really going on, and not ignore it. While all around us seems to be in dramatic change, the future is not yet set in stone, and we have the ability to change it to a brighter one.
