With a seamless fusion of R&B, soul, and funk, Rosita and P.U.R.P come together in their debut single, ‘Jody’, featuring standout artist, Akeem Ali. Not only that, but the track is accompanied by a mini-film that allows Rosita’s background in film to shine.
Born in Jackson, Mississippi, and raised in Inglewood, California, Rosita returned to her home state to study music at the University of Southern Mississippi. Temporarily distracted by an interest in journalism, that led her to New Orleans’ bustling film scene, where she worked both behind and in front of the camera, she nevertheless found her way back to her true calling of music. Meanwhile,P.U.R.P, a rapper, songwriter, and engineer, was born and raised in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and became a firm friend of Rosita during their days at university. The pair reconnected when Rosita returned to LA, and they discovered they shared a creative chemistry, resulting in their debut single, ‘Jody’.
Joining the pair on the track is another Mississippi up and comer, Akeem Ali, who’s been taking the world by storm with his 70s nostalgic style. He provides a verse with his signature silky-smooth vocals, which helps to unravel the tensions of a complicated love triangle. All up, ‘Jody’ is wrapped in a sultry blend of lo-fi R&B and modern-day flair, as the storyline follows the hearts of two men entangled in a no-strings-attached romance love affair, which sees both more than willing to sweep their girl off her feet at any given moment.
Rosita stands her ground with a steady, self-assured delivery, her vocals matching Akeem Ali’s in their silky expressiveness, with the cool confidence of a woman who knows exactly what she wants. Meanwhile, P.U.R.P.’s flow is decadently smooth, as it glides along a mellow bassline, accompanied by soft keys, and shimmering synths. It’s the perfect track to keep on repeat all summer long.
The ‘Jody’ music video is almost a mini film. Both men find that they’re not the only one in their woman’s life. As soon as her man leaves for work, “Jody” is ready to escape for a romantic getaway, far away from the humdrum of her relationship. There’s a twist however: she’s not got one man but at least two more on the go – in addition to the one she lives with – and the second lover, played by Akeem Ali, who presumed he was the only one., finds out, and calls for reinforcements.
