‘Corpus Christi’ From Le Concorde Is An 80s Nostalgia-Fest With A Surprising Dedication

Released on February 28, ‘Corpus Christi’ is the new single from Los Angeles artist, Le Concorde.

The stage name of Stephen Becker, ‘Corpus Christi’ marks the end of a 15 year hiatus for Le Concorde, whose previous releases, one out on March Records and the other via Le Grand Magistery, were received to much acclaim, so one imagines his return will excite many who’ve lamented his time away.

‘Corpus Christi’ comes ahead of Le Concorde’s new album, ‘Second Mansions’, which is set for release this September. The album boasts a supporting cast of the elite from the mid 80s, and consequently feels like something that could easily have been a rediscovered album from that time.

‘Corpus Christi’ instantly has an 80s vibe right out of the gate. The instrumentals are fabulously retro, and Becker’s voice is just so deliciously nostalgic; almost like a cross between Bowie, Trevor Horn, and maybe a pinch or two of Lindsey Buckingham. Exquisite! The track features backing vocals by Doris Brendel, drums and percussion by Ash Soan, bass from Vinzenz Benjamin, while Roger Manning Jr and Becker provide keyboards, and is accompanied by a suitably pixelated music video, set in an 80s video game.

This is where nostalgia meets modern day. The video is dedicated to Carlos Acutis, a web designer who dedicated his life to a website he created, which was dedicated to cataloguing each reported Eucharistic miracle in the world and maintaining a list of the approved Marian apparitions of the Catholic Church. He died from leukemia in 2006, aged just 15, mere days after the launch of his website, and, in an incredible twist, there have been at least two miracles attributed to the intercession of Acutis, and he is set for canonisation on April 27 this year.

The video is a stylised telling of Acutis’s life and death, showing his ascent to heaven to meet Jesus, who is essentially the final Boss.

While this may all seem very disconnected, ‘Corpus Christi’ was originally conceived as a contribution to a film about Eucharistic miracles, so it is fitting, yet it’s still quite a beautiful track when considered apart from this.
