Lisa Michelle Anderson Is Fighting Her Demons With ‘Devil On My Back’

Released on January 31, ‘Devil On My Back’ is the new single from Lisa Michelle Anderson.

An artist whose sound reflects the life lived way beyond her hometown roots in Southeast Kansas – she’s lived in places as far apart as Iran, Greece, and Australia – Anderson’s music has received critical acclaim, and seen her support the likes of Warren Zenon, and the Jayhawks.

First picking up a guitar when she was 16 and living in Australia, Anderson was soon consumed by a passion for music that started out simply from enjoying listening to Joni Mitchell, and Neil Young. This led her into the Americana music scene, first at Silver Dollar City in Branston, Missouri, and then San Diego, where she developed her magnificent stage presence by performing in a rough and tumble biker bar.

New single, ‘Devil On My Back’, opens with an urgently galloping guitar, and pounding drums. Anderson’s voice is breathy, ethereal, and the lyrics tell a story of trying to fight one’s demons: wanting to live clean, but always finding you’re dragged back into the bad habits you wanted to escape. It’s paired with a music video that starts with a lushly decorated cake, a shiny red cherry (or is it a tempting apple?) right on the top. Anderson is seated on a chair in a gaudily decorated bedroom, playing electric guitar, sandwiched in between what appear to be two massive boxes of candy. She later moves to the bed, and is a bit more relaxed, while scenes relating to the lyrics such as a roller coaster, a devil statuette, and a sign in the desert, are interspersed. All the while, Anderson is smiling as she sings, despite the sometimes despairing nature of the lyrics.
