On The Day Of The US Presidential Election, Cashavelly Empowers Women With Music Video For New Single ‘Prom’

Released in time with her new album, ‘Meditation Through Gunfire’, the video for Cashavelly’s latest single, ‘Prom’ is a glorious example of her rigorous, yet playful creative process, and features a crew of young women about to go to their prom, while reflecting on their lives in a patriarchal society.

“All a girl really needs is a diary and chewing gum to turn it into love” sounds innocuous enough, but then the lyrics ramp it up to 11, as Cashavelly and a choir of female voices sing of their power – “now that we’re it”. No more hiding in closets waiting to come out – our time is now.

It’s a great track to think about today, as the US goes to the polls to decide who will lead them for the next four years.

Cashavelly’s vocals are strong and emotive, accompanied not just by the the prom girls, but also by a tremendous drumming – almost a war drum – provided by Chaisaray Schenck. And it is a war. The outcome of today’s election could determine the fate of not just the USA, but also that of the rest of the world.

It’s time to rise up. At no other time in the US have women – first time voters and long voting veterans – had such an opportunity to stand up, have their say, and be counted. At a time when female reproductive rights, and women’s rights altogether – including the right to vote in free and fair elections – are at risk in the US, it’s so important to remember that women no longer have to hide in the closets – we’re it.

‘Prom’ is out now. You can watch the music video below. Find out more about Cashavelly and her music online on her official website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
