Incredible vocalist, V. Contreras takes on those who’d rather see her remain in place than seek her success in the stars in her latest release, ‘Done Playing Small’.
The accompanying music video sees the artist defiant, as she rejoices in reconnecting with the young girl within her who was strong and vibrant before the world made her curtail her dreams, ambitions, and, ultimately, her self-worth.
Based in Seattle, V. Contreras started at the age of 12, performing with a 25-piece jazz band, before working with music legend Randy Jackson, as well as renowned songwriters and producers whose work has seen them collaborate with the likes of Madonna, Whitney Houston, Brandi Carlile, and Macklemore.
V. Contreras brings a forceful message with ‘Done Playing Small’, presented with her dynamic vocal style, original songwriting, a soaring melody, and deep emotion. Produced by Davide Russo (Ruhde) and written by the artist herself, ‘Done Playing Small’ is aimed to resonate deeply with listeners. Contreras says,
“It’s about reclaiming your power, rewriting personal narratives and deciding not to live by someone else’s definition of who you should be. I hope that this message inspires others to do the same.”
Built on an electronic groove that allows Contreras’ powerful voice to drive the song, ‘Done Playing Small’ tells the story of the voice of a child who can’t be heard, embodied in the song of a woman who won’t be silenced.
The music video for ‘Done Playing Small’ is shot in black and white, filmed and directed by Fuego Gatsby, and portrays a young girl lost and looking for validation, a teenager leaving a bad situation, a bride whose happiness has been taken away from her, and other women ripe for personal liberation. Even Contreras herself undergoes a transformation, moving from a black-garbed figure cloaked in darkness to become white-robed as the clip becomes full colour. Contreras tosses handfuls of dirt, symbolising her rejection of all those who tried to hold her back, and her voice soars, unrestrained and free.
