Yesterday, on July 12th, alice does computer music released her latest single, ‘Coiled’. The Chicago-based artist, whose real name is Alice Gerlach, is releasing the track to serve as a preview into what her newest album, ‘Shoegaze 5G’, will sound like. The aforementioned album will be releasing later this year, on August 4th, 2023, following up her debut self-titled EP which was released in 2021.
Gerlach got her start in music at a relatively young age, learning to play the classical cello, but became frustrated with the rigidity of cello training and wished to use the cello in her own way. Learning digital music production in college not only helped her with the electronic elements of production, but also allowed her to make better use of her cello knowledge, which she later incorporated into her debut EP. Now, Gerlach wants to show the world her unique style with ‘Shoegaze 5G’, her latest venture into the music industry.
Don’t let the title fool you, because ‘Shoegaze 5G’ isn’t just a shoegaze album, but incorporates elements of many other genres, including, but not limited to; classical, electronic, indie rock and some influence from pop. This multi-genre influence shows itself in ‘Coiled’, where Gerlach mixes all these elements together into one beautiful song, which is difficult to describe, but pleasant to listen to, much like a classic shoegaze track from the likes of My Bloody Valentine or M83. Although shoegaze has been on the decline since the late 90s, the genre is not dead, as artists like Alice continue to demonstrate, continuing the genre into the 21st century.
