The High Plains Drifters follow up the runaway success of the video for their previous singles, ‘The One That Got Away’, and ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’ with another surefire chart topper, ‘He Reminds Me Of You’. Once again, they return to Norway where director Lars Skaland set his creative talents to work on a clip that’s as sexy as it is catchy and enjoyable.
We loved ‘The One That Got Away‘, and ‘Since You’ve Been Gone‘, but it’s quite possible we love the video for ‘He Reminds Me Of You’ even more. Shot once again in Norway, this time the song features three lead vocalists, Christina Benedetto, John Macom, and Larry Studnicky. The video is set in a college, where the girl is a student, her lecturer a stern-faced man who wields a long plastic ruler almost sadistically. The girl is distracted on two fronts; she’s got a boyfriend who keeps wanting her attention – messaging her during class – and for whatever reason there’s something about the teacher that she finds quite appealing.
The lyrics for ‘He Reminds Me Of You’ are sensual enough on their own, with their references to sex play, tying someone up, and imagining being in bed with not just your partner, but two other participants. The video however leaves nothing to chance, as we see that the girl is paying off her college tuition by working as a dominatrix. Her blindfolded subject is none other than her lecturer, although it’s not clear that he knows it’s her; he wears a blindfold throughout their meetings.
Meanwhile the girl’s boyfriend, who is closer to her in age, is very needy, demanding of her attention, and yet when they’re together it’s not an equal balance – he is the dominating force. It’s no wonder the girl is torn.
The simple synth rhythms of ‘He Reminds Me Of You’ softly support the vocals, before giving way to strong pounding drums and strident guitars. Unlike the relationships the girl finds herself in, this is an equal partnership.
